In his documentary "The Cartel," Bowdon, a New Jersey TV news newsman, turns the camera upon the monumental degeneracy and misdirection that has led his state to squander more than any other on its students just with shoddy results. The numbers tell the tale: $17,000 spent per student, and at hand's but a 39% reading proficiency rate, it's distressing to contend that there's a crisis underway, but harder to agree on a solution.

On the one side is the monolithic Jersey teachers union and shady school officials, who guarantee that, as Bowdon points out in his picture, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a shocking example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. On the other side are the supporters of charter schools -- private schools which can function beyond the power of what Bowdon calls The Cartel. In those disordered public schools, Bowdon points out, it's very nearly impossible to fire an instructor -- so even a dreadful one has a job for life.

"The movie examines lots of diverse aspects of public teaching, tenure, financing, patronage drops, corruption --meaning thievery -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it kind of serves as a swift-moving primer on all of the red-hot topics within the education-reform movement."

"The film started making the round of the festivals in summer 2009, and made its theatrical debut just about a year later, in spring 2010. The movie has started a lot of talk, which ought no doubt carry on with the more-recent release of "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim's own education expose, "Waiting for Superman." Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim's taking the human-interest slant. "The two films attain common conclusions," Bowdon says.

The left-brained stance means arguments that observe the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. But that isn't to say the film is without heart. Bowdon makes certain his eye is at all times on the people affected, principally the inner-city students trapped in a damaged system. A girl's weeping upon hearing that she wasn't selected to attend a charter school, that she's stuck in her public school, represent the failure of a system as well as Bowdon's charts and interviews.

And though it may be simple to accept the presence of corruption in a state so associated with organized crime, the uncomfortable fact of the subject is that this is a very familiar situation. The general message of the movie is that only by working together, can humanity save it self against the tide of history. Initially, the project which is developed to save only a small percentage of people is reserved only for the wealthy and the scientifically literate, in the end they make room for the common, blue collar worker. Finally, the story works well as a movie because it is easier to follow the travels of the different parts of the Fellowship. In the book, the companions split up at the end of the first movie. Boromir betrays the Fellowship by attempting to take the ring from Frodo by force. You understand why he does so after you meet the people of Gondor, including Boromir's brother Faramir and the corrupt and deranged Steward who has cracked under the pressure of living next to Mordor.

You also begin to learn more about some of the motivations which affect the characters. Boromir, who is killed in the first movie, is from Gondor, a land on the border of Mordor and under constant siege from the forces of darkness. The movie delves into the motivations of the people of Gondor. We are introduced to Faramir, younger brother of Boromir who is desperate to prove himself to his father who serves as Steward of that country.

Although there were some criticisms surrounding the way Peter Jackson treated the storyline, for the most part this movie has been praised. There are so many memorable moments (such as the unforgettable Battle of Helm's Deep) that you are set up to go into the third part of the story with a much better understanding of Middle Earth as a whole.

Sir Kenneth MacMillan, although a dancer himself, is widely regarded for his contributions to choreography. Born in Dunfermline, Scotland on the 11th December 1929 to a working class family, Macmillan grew up in Great Yarmouth and took up dancing at the age of 12. Naturally gifted he moved to London when he was just 15 years old after being accepted by the Sadler's Wells Ballet.

McMillan was a talented dancer, however he suffered from debilitating stage fright and found himself more comfortable in the role of choreographer. He instantly became noticed with the first two ballets he choreographed -Somnambulism in 1953 and Laiderette in 1954. Although, just starting out Macmillan's choreography showed distinctive accomplishment and as early as 1955 he was creating works for Sadler's Wells, second only to legendary choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton.

MacMillan's talent for choreography was notable from the offset and a succession of short acclaimed works were produced for Sadler's Wells Ballet including Solitaire in 1956, The Burrow in 1958, Le baiser de la fe in 1960, The Rite of Spring in 1962 and La Cration du monde in 1964, to name just a few.

The year 1965 saw MacMillan's 'tour de force' Romeo and Juliet performed. His choreography for this piece was received exceptionally favorably and has become one his most loved and remembered pieces of work. As mentioned previously MacMillan was also made the resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet in 1965 however he fell out with Sadler's Wells the following year and left to work in Berlin at the Deutsche Oper, staying there for 3 years.

In 1970 MacMillan returned to the Royal Ballet as director where he succeeded Sir Frederick Ashton. He continued to choreograph and produce works of ballet that were widely acclaimed although he resigned as the company's director in 1977. He did not leave The Royal Ballet completely though, reverting back to the role he found the most natural for him - choreographer. Notable pieces of work he choreographed during this period include The Seven Deadly Sins in 1973, Elite Syncopations in1974, Mayerling in 1978, The Prince of the Pagodas in 1989 and The Judas Tree in 1992.

Macmillan had a reputation for producing works that were challenging, often dwelling on the darker side of life or confronting the gritty realisms of life.
