Tron Legacy At Last Gives A Sequel To The 1982 Original

By Selene R. Singleton

After nearly 30 years of waiting, film makers are finally about to release Tron Legacy, the long awaited sequel to the great 1982 film Tron. Many people speculated that Disney was going to release a sequel in the 1990's, especially since Tron has a huge cult following still. Fans of the first film were disappointed to find that no sequel was ever made. That was until the 2008 San Francisco Comic-Con when Disney panel members at long last confirmed that the studio was seriously working on the second installment.

Kevin Flynn was the main character in the original Tron film, and Tron Legacy follows the story of his son, Sam Flynn. As Sam tries to learn the truth about his father's disappearance, he ends up getting trapped in the same virtual universe where his father has been and they have to work together to get out of it.

The first official report of the Tron Legacy project released to the press was that Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal were hired by Disney to write the screenplay back in January 2005. Concerned fans were relieved to see that Disney had not stopped work on Tron Legacy when they saw a trailer at the 2008 Comic-Con. Tron Legacy was officially bestowed that name by the Disney panel at the 2009 Comic-Con. This title was selected for its relation to the movie's strong family feel as a son desperately seeks out his father.

The first Tron film was beloved for countless reasons, perhaps most of all the Light Cycles featured in the movie; they are back and have been redesigned for Tron Legacy. A two seat Light Runner was also created by Daniel Simon and his design team. Life size models of the Light Cycles have been built and one was shown to visitors at the Fan Expo 2009 in Toronto.

Filming for Tron Legacy began in April 2009 in Vancouver, British Columbia. All of the stage scenes for the movie were done at the Canadian Motion Picture Park. The producers were intent on making this a 3D film, so they used 3D cameras at all stages of the movie making process. The audio for the film is made up of 24 tracks, all arranged by the Daft Punk duo. Tron Legacy comes to cinemas in Canada and the US on December 17, 2010. - 40725
