Born on the 27th of January 1756 in Salzburg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's musical roots were established from the very beginning of his life. His father Leopold was a composer of some note and also an accomplished violinist. Mozart's mother was Anna Maria Pertl and he had one sister called Anna who was born in 1951.

At just 4 years old Wolfgang's talent for music was already startlingly evident. He was able to play the same pieces on the piano that his older sister could. At 5 years old Wolfgang had composed his first minuet and this was followed by his first symphony, which is said to have been composed when he was only 9 years old. Wolfgang and his sister went on a tour of Vienna with their father in 1792 where they played for various members of the aristocracy. Both children played piano and Wolfgang played the violin also. Their father arranged a longer tour of Europe for his children in 1763 and again the children performed for the aristocracy of several countries. Mozart was commissioned to compose his first opera at the age of 14 - it was called Mitridate, re di Ponto.

"The movie examines lots of diverse aspects of public teaching, tenure, financing, patronage drops, corruption --meaning thievery -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it kind of serves as a swift-moving primer on all of the red-hot topics within the education-reform movement."

Our tale begins with two scientists, one from India, and one who works for the United States government deep in some underground laboratory. They discover some troubling information regarding the core of the Earth, which indicates that our collective goose may be cooked.

Meanwhile, in common disaster movie tradition, the movie jumps between different characters, and how they deal with the slow revelation that something much bigger than they can handle is going on around them. Some of these characters of course come together in the end, and help each other, for the most part, to survive the calamity.

In order to really get a feel for the characters loss, we are introduced to several upstanding and likable characters, and see how they deal with the knowledge that their world is ending, without being able to do anything about it.

The general message of the movie is that only by working together, can humanity save it self against the tide of history. Initially, the project which is developed to save only a small percentage of people is reserved only for the wealthy and the scientifically literate, in the end they make room for the common, blue collar worker. However, the slower portions tend to be balanced by shorter sections that depict great action such as important battles and sieges.

Because the movie tends to simply allow the terrain to speak for itself, much of the focus is suddenly on character development, dialogue and actual action. Instead of spending time reading about what the moss on a statue looked like or what the texture of a cloak felt like, we can see the characters passing the landmarks and wearing the clothing. Jackson's team was made up of amazing make-up artists who were able to turn humans into fearsome orcs and Uruk-hai. Suddenly, you can see the way creatures such as Ents look and how they sound rather than trying to picture it in your head.

Because the focus in on action and not description, it is harder to ignore the references to the two towers. The first is that of Sauron himself, deep in the heart and darkness of Mordor. The second is that of the wizard Saruman who has fallen under Sauron's control. You see the extent of Saruman's treachery which is first mentioned in the Fellowship of the Ring.

Finally, the story works well as a movie because it is easier to follow the travels of the different parts of the Fellowship. In the book, the companions split up at the end of the first movie. Boromir betrays the Fellowship by attempting to take the ring from Frodo by force. You understand why he does so after you meet the people of Gondor, including Boromir's brother Faramir and the corrupt and deranged Steward who has cracked under the pressure of living next to Mordor.

You also begin to learn more about some of the motivations which affect the characters. Boromir, who is killed in the first movie, is from Gondor, a land on the border of Mordor and under constant siege from the forces of darkness. The movie delves into the motivations of the people of Gondor. We are introduced to Faramir, younger brother of Boromir who is desperate to prove himself to his father who serves as Steward of that country.

Although there were some criticisms surrounding the way Peter Jackson treated the storyline, for the most part this movie has been praised. There are so many memorable moments (such as the unforgettable Battle of Helm's Deep) that you are set up to go into the third part of the story with a much better understanding of Middle Earth as a whole.

Both the movie and the book have an important role to play in the overall trilogy. Peter Jackson's version keeps the viewer riveted and the visual scenes of travelling keep the interest level up more than the book tends to do. - 40725
