It is not unusual to hear stories about musicians living wild, crazy lives, wasting all their time, talent, and money, and deteriorating through the use of drugs and the abuse of alcohol. We see them flying quickly into the sky and crashing down into oblivion.
We sometimes idealize and deify those who gave everything of themselves, while simultaneously digging an untimely shallow grave, littered with dead flowers, empty wine bottles, and spray painted graffiti.
Writers who don't perform live are a little stronger in resisting the extreme experiences that some musicians fall into, or seek. However, many of us still share these same propensities that push us into indulgent, abusive, and destructive lives. We are often lacking the certainty of whether or not our rent will be paid from month to month, while simultaneously being imbued with the deep passion to share and showcase our creative ideas to a world of adoring fans that will often condone any of our actions as cool or forgivable.
If you are hooked on the wild ride, and want to hang on to the runaway train, blasting out magnificent music while it tumbles off a mountain cliff, more power to you! I am not one to judge such personal choices; I have had my own Dances with the Devil, and felt the flames on my toes.
I would just like to make you away of the FLIP SIDE OF THIS COIN, the other heroic figure in music. These are the songwriters and performers who find a way to walk the tightrope without a net, and never seem to fall. They stick around for a long career and give something back to the world.
Some of these musicians that I can think of are Bono, from the band U2, who promotes great causes around the Globe, and Paul McCartney, who devoted his whole path in music to love, peace, and the promotion of meditation, and other positive influences on society.
The key to becoming a gift giver to the world lies in finding inner BALANCE, and dedicating some of your life to PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. - 40725
