City Island Reviewed

By Derrick Carney

City Island is a movie made in 2009, which came out in April of 2010, starting Emmy Nominated Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies as a married couple seemingly stuck in a rut. Their entire family, including themselves, can not face the truth. Vince Rizzo, Garcia's character, is a corrections officer and longs to be a big star. This revelation is a secret he wants to keep from his family and hides his weekly acting classes as best he can.

This dark family comedy won the coveted audience award at the 2009 famed Tribeca Film Festival where most films go to generate a buzz which in turn brings more people out to view the film when it hits the theaters. This was its first screening and critics and movie-goers both enjoyed the hilarity that came out of this charming yet smart film about the lengths families will go to in order hide the truth from one another.

Each of the members of this dysfunctional family is hiding a secret that they believe if revealed, would destroy one another and the very foundation of their family. The father of the family, Garcia of the Ocean's films, secretly wants to be an actor and takes a weekly acting class. His wife, Joyce, played by Margulies of the Good Wife, is busy playing detective because she believes her husband is cheating on her rather than plotting a big Hollywood career.

Other family members include a daughter who is supposed to be attending collage but instead is a stripper. This character is performed by Dominik Garca-Lorido of the Lost City. The Rizzo's young, teenage son's performance is done by Ezra Miller of television's Californication and he is trying to keep his secret love and fetish regarding the family's 300 pound neighbor. The performance of the drama coach of the elder Rizzo is done by Emmy Award Winner Alan Arkin from Little Miss Sunshine. He, too, has several secrets he's keeping from the rest of those on screen.

One of the first things a screenwriter must do when putting their story on paper is to answer the question 'why today?' this will give the audience the reason for the movie. The main character in this film, Vince Rizzo answers this question for us through his excited reaction to an acting game. He recently found his long-lost son in the prison where he works as a corrections officer and decides to bring him home to meet his family. This is the beginning of the families many secrets unveiling.

Emily Mortimer of the movie Shutter Island gives a performance of the elder Rizzo's confidant and acting partner. Mortimer and Garcia's chemistry is almost perfect in this quirky and almost always funny movie for the most laughs and best chemistry, money is on Margulies' and Garcia. They play a typical New York married couple whose miscommunications and constant love-hate yelling will steal the show.

The movie is named for an actual place; a small town on the outskirts of the Bronx's and it is a community deep with family traditions. Grandparents and parents pass down their homes to the children to live in when they no longer can care for them. There are virtually no outsiders in this tiny seaside community. In its heyday, this community was a bustling port for fisherman. Barely anyone knows it exists except for some people in Manhattan and maybe a few in the Bronx, however, that is changing.

Written and directed by Raymond De Felitta from Two Family House, the project was a labor of love. Andy Garcia is one of the producers, co-producers and executives producers attached to this film. August 24, 2010 is the DVD and Blu-Ray release date of City Island. - 40725
